HODALA! A Single Speed Race/Commuter Wheelset
A good ‘cross friend of mind approached me with a simple request for a wheelset he was envisioning.
“This bike is generally my commuter, so the wheels don’t need to be crazy light or carbon or anything like that.”
Nate Atkins is a local “silly-speeder” [single speed cyclocross], and a Seattle commuter, both with the same bike. He is a strong and smooth rider on the course, but the daily grind can really be a burden on most aftermarket wheels.
After a little back and forth for getting the small details down on the build, the results are nothing short of perfect, in my mind.
HODALA!
To commemorate the HODALA! drinking team, a splash of their cycling kit’s retro color fade was incorporated into the spoke nipples.
Along with a White Industries Dos ENO 16/18t freewheel, the wheels can easily be setup for commuting in the 16t, or racing in the 18t without changing out the hardware. It’s especially nice that it is 100% re-buildable and more dependable than any other freewheel on the market.
Wheel Specs:
- High Flange, Sealed Track Hubset (100mm/130mm)
- Sapim Race Butted Spokes

I wish Nate many awesome miles both on and off the course.
